The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has apprehended one Dennis Seyram Benson who has been parading himself as the legal counsel of the separatist group, Western Togoland.
Benson, 42 was arrested today, Thursday, December 17, 2020, at the Kaneshie District Court 2 when he appeared to represent the separatists in their ongoing trial.
In September 2020 separatists in Western Togoland declared independence from the Republic of Ghana.
According to the police, Dennis Seyram Benson who parades himself as a lawyer has been representing the suspects since the inception of the case.
A quick background investigation was launchedby the Ghana Police Service and reveals that he was not a lawyer.
The police in a statement said, the demeanour of the Mr Seyram Benson in court raised suspicion leading to a background check which revealed that he was a fake lawyer.
It will be recalled that in October 2020, the State re-arraigned the alleged separatists suspected of being behind violence in parts of the Volta Region only hours after they were discharged by Circuit Courts in Accra.
The suspects were charged, variously, with; treason felony, conspiracy to commit crime, namely, treason felony, conspiracy to commit crime, namely, participating in a campaign of prohibited organisation namely Western Togoland, conspiracy to commit crime, namely, causing unlawful damage.
Western Togoland is an area de jure in the Republic of Ghana. The area of Western Togoland is divided into five regions: Volta, Oti, Northern region, North East region and Upper East Region.
