A few hours ago presidential candidate and incumbent president, Emmerson Mnangagwa was announced as the winner of what has been tension-filled Zimbabwean election process. According to BBC World News Mr. Mnangagwa won by a 50.8% against a 44.3% of the opposition MDC party, who immediately rejected the results.
The Movement for Democratic Change alliance had expressed fear of election rigging in the days before the announcement owing to the fact that the Presidential ballots which were counted first had not been announced over 24 hours after the parliamentary results were declared. The Zambian Electoral Commission however said that the delay was due to the failure of the various representatives of the candidates in validating the result, a procedure which is a constitutional requirement in the country.
However, the MDC alliance have since refused the results calling the election a ‘coup.’
