The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a new GH₵5 note which will go into circulation on Tuesday, March 7 as part of celebrations of its 60th anniversary.
Ghana’s central bank marks its 60th anniversary on March 4 this year and the circulation of the new GH₵5 note is a key part of the diamond jubilee celebrations.
According to the BoG, the new currency will be legal tender as well as a collector’s item and will be used alongside the existing GH₵5 note. However, it must be noted that the new note is also smaller than existing one.
On the face of the new GH₵5 note is Ghanaian missionary and educationist, James Kwegyir Aggrey while the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Kwame Nkrumah is depicted on the other side.
“Ghanaians have been waiting for this, and it will be in circulation on the market on Tuesday 7th march, to mark the celebration,” Edward Musey, the Head of the Currency Management Department of the BoG said at the unveiling of the note today in Accra.

“The note will have additional security features, that are sensitive to touch to aid the blind and visually challenged in identifying the new notes.
“We took into consideration our physically and virtually challenged friends, and so there are some features on the notes that will help them,” he added.
The climax of the celebrations will take place in August this year, which would mark 60 years since the bank opened its doors to the public.
