A major blackout which lasted for over four hours hit Accra and four other regions during the wee hours of Wednesday.

The other affected regions are Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West. Although power has been restored in some parts of the country, most towns in these affected regions are still without electricity.

The Power Ministry said a heavy downpour Tuesday caused damage to one of the transmission lines of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

“The main fault is from the Tafo Akwatia where as a result of a rainstorm the main line has been shuttered,” the deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor, told Accra-based Joy FM.

“Fortunately they have identified the problem to be from the Tafo Akwatia main line to solve the challenges,” he said. “So we are looking at the end of today for the power to be restored.”

Engineers are working around the clock to fix the problem.
