The National Peace Council has stated that it has not issued any statement condemning NPP vice Presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his religious comments.
Dr. Bawumia addressing some New Patriotic Party supporters in the Sissala East district of the Upper West region said “another major issue that I want to bring to the attention of the people is that; if we look at the flagstaff house today, it does not reflect the people of Ghana in terms of religion.
“We are in this country living peacefully and nicely; Christians and Muslims. So we believe in the NPP that Christians and Muslims should work together and that is why whenever we pick a flagbearer as a Christian, we pick a Muslim as a vice.
“And when we come and pick a Muslim as a flagbearer, we will pick a Christian as a vice. So if, Insha Allah, Nana Akufo-Addo becomes president, he will swear with the Bible and enter the Flagstaff and I will swear with the Quran and enter the flagstaff House.”
A statement making rounds on Facebook indicated that the Peace Council had condemned Dr. Bawumia over his comments.
But in a disclaimer, the Peace Council stated that the statement making rounds on social media is “false and fabricated.”
The statement added: “We are yet to read what Dr. Bawumia said and confirm before we can agree whether to come out with a statement about it either than that, we in the National peace council entreat the general public to treat the said release with the contempt it deserves.”
Meanwhile, in an interview with Starr News, Chairman of the National Peace Council Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey described the utterances from the NPP scribe as unfortunate and should not be encouraged.
Below is the Disclaimer by the Peace Council
DISCLAIMER! DISCLAIMER!! DISCLAIMER!!!
The attention of the National Peace Council has been drawn to a statement circulating on the social media with a caption “THE NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL CONDEMNS DR. BAWUMIA ON POTENTIALLY RELIGIOUS INFLAMMATORY COMMENT”.
We are very surprise some people want to play with the integrity and the credibility of the National Peace Council because of their political interest.
This statement going rounds on the social media which says Prof. Emmanuel Asante has signed on behalf of the National Peace council is false and fabricated. The National Peace council is not hypocrite to make such a release because of pressure from some political parties.
We are yet to read what Dr. Bawumia said and confirm before we can agree whether to come out with a statement about it either than that, we in the National peace council entreat the general public to treat the said release with the contempt it deserves.
Thank you
