The three ex-south African security officers who were arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) are to be put before an Accra high court Wednesday, March 23, 2016.
The BNI says they were engaging in acts that threaten national security.
The New Patriotic Party has disclosed that they hired the services of the detained ex-south African security officers for purposes of training the personal security detail of the flag bearer and his running mate.
They dismissed suggestions that the men are a security threat. In a statement Tuesday, the opposition NPP stated that the three men pose no security threat to Ghana.
The party stated that they had hired the services of the men to train the security detail of its presidential and vice presidential candidates in a routine exercise.
The party disclosed that the two personal drivers of the candidates, as well as the official photographer of Nana Akufo-Addo, were part of the 15 persons undergoing training, which took place on the premises of a well-known, licensed, Ghanaian security company, Delta Security.
The party says the three South Africans arrived in the country on Business visas.
The party says training of personnel in VIP protection is the core business of the South Africans, and, therefore, no deception was intended. They also dismissed allegations that they are mercenaries.
The three – Chris Hazis (named by the BNI as Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis), Warrant Officer Denver Dwahye, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, – according to the Daily Graphic Newspaper were picked up at the EL-Capitano Hotel where they had been based since arriving in the country early this month.
The South African High Commission in Ghana has written to our foreign affairs ministry requesting access to speak with the three detained ex-south African security forces personnel.
